Everything from fresh fish & chips straight off the boat to icebergs, whales, puffins and breathtaking views. The beautiful, yet unassuming islands of Twillingate are well worth the drive, wherever you find yourself.
About a 5hour drive from St. John's and 1.5hours from Gander, make a day trip at the very least to experience this beautiful tourist getaway.
Heads-up, book those boat tours and excursions well ahead of time if you're visiting during peak season in the Summer months...this place may be small but it's incredibly busy with tourists.
We spent a great day around the two islands that make up Twillingate - we drove most of the two islands, took in some icebergs, climbed a lighthouse and learned it's history (including a tsunami that hit the area decades ago!), had some tasty local grub and even picked up some homemade fudge for the drive back.
The Long Point Lighthouse is located in a town called Crow Head and was built in 1876. It is opened most days for visitors and you can even climb to the top of this piece of Newfoundland history - not something you can do in most lighthouses!
Also in the town of Crow Head, we picked up some amazing local fudge from a shop in the same parking lot as the lighthouse. There are also multiple great hiking trails and lookout points to take in the vast North Atlantic Ocean.
Icebergs are of course one of the biggest draws for people that come to Twillingate from all over the world - if you don't believe me, just have a listen to the different languages coming from the tour buses!
This year was another banner season for icebergs along the Newfoundland & Labrador coastline so we were spoiled with the amount of bergs in town.
Did I mention that the Auk Island Winery's home base is also in Twilingate? They have some great wines to try!
It's not everyday you can enjoy a great meal, 25 degree sunshine and have an iceberg as your third wheel :)
